Our hertiage

In 1990, Nick and Kath Whitworth saw an advert in a local Cornish paper which caught their eye, offering a small sheepskin boot-making business for sale. They bought it with just seven pairs in stock and taught themselves to sew. Within a year they’d built up a local following of their Ugg style boots they registered UGG as a trademark, changing the company name to The Original UGG Company. By 1997 they sold the UGG trademark and were able to move to a bigger premises to expand, becoming Celtic Sheepskin.

In 2013, we changed our trading name to Celtic & Co. as a way of retaining our heritage but also reflecting our increased product range alongside our boots and slippers which remain at the heart of the brand. Since the very beginning, we have always used natural materials which are renewable, durable and a pleasure to wear, and minimises our impact on the environment.

Celtic & Co. is now part of the Refined Brands group, trading internationally and employing more than 100 people in Cornwall across its head offices in Indian Queens, and factory and creative hub in Newquay.

Our Managing Director, Zoe Bray, has been at the helm since 2022, having been with the brand for more than nine years as former head of marketing, and continues to champion our core values of British design, expert craftsmanship, responsible sourcing, and timeless style.
