A bit of information about The Salt Sisterhood.

The Salt Sisterhood launched ‘officially’ in early 2019, but we have been organising and running Yoga & Surf retreats and Yoga & Wild Swimming for the last 3 years or so. The Salt Sisterhood offers Yoga and Salt Water Wellbeing Retreats for Women, and our ethos is represented by our tagline - “For She Who Is Stirred By The Sea”. Our aim is to encourage women of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to find a connection with the water that benefits them in terms of health and overall wellbeing.

I was inspired to create The Salt Sisterhood after reading a book called ‘Blue Mind’ by Wallace J Nichols, written about the profoundly positive effects that being in or near water can have on our health and happiness. This book confirmed to me what I already knew - which is that the water makes me feel healthier, happier and more relaxed, and I felt inspired to share this with other women. I surf and get in the sea as much as possible for my own mental health, having struggled with anxiety over the years, I find that this connection with the water has really helped me on my own personal journey.

Diving-into-the-sea

The other big love in my life which has really benefited me is my Yoga practice - I thought it would be a really amazing thing to combine these two elements together in the form of a retreat where women can reconnect with nature, the ocean, each other and more importantly with themselves. The Salt Sisterhood offers Yoga & Surfing retreats and Yoga & Wild Swimming retreats, so our guests can choose whether they want to learn to ride the waves or whether a relaxing swim in a beautiful spot in nature is more their thing. During the retreats, we get in the water every day, we practice Yoga, eat nourishing soul food together prepared by our talented chefs and we explore meditation and mindfulness practices that our guests can take away with them and weave into their everyday lives and still benefit from once they get back home to normal life outside of the retreat ‘bubble’.

Question & Answer

Is there a product/service that you are most proud of?

I am most proud of our women’s Yoga & Wild Swimming Retreat in Cornwall, as this is a unique concept that I haven’t seen done anywhere before and it really fills my heart up when I see our guests embracing the early morning cold water swims, connecting with nature, unwinding and finding that time to really take care of themselves. Some people may view a retreat as an indulgence, but I think in our day and age where being busy has become the norm, I think it’s really vital for our health and wellbeing that we take time out and learn these kinds of practices as a part of our self-care.

When you’re not working, what else do you enjoy doing? Tell us about your interests and hobbies.

I am very lucky to be able to blend my hobbies, passions and my work together, but when I’m not officially working I enjoy surfing, wild swimming, coastal walks and I have a keen interest in photography.

What is your top tip to unwind?

I guess this is going to be obvious, but my number one top tip to unwind is to get in the sea! Whether it’s surfing, paddleboarding, swimming, dashing in and out, bobbing or just floating - It really does have such a huge effect on how we feel. Personally, I feel that getting in the sea really helps to reset my brain and makes me feel hugely relaxed and grounded and also grateful for all the simple but important things in life.

What’s on your playlist at the moment?

Dark Sky, RHAIN, Kiasmos, Edyth, Christian Loffler, Teebs, Dauwd.

Where is your ultimate holiday destination?

That’s a very difficult question! I have travelled quite a bit and fallen in love with so many different places, but I would have to say that Mexico probably tops my list. It’s such a massive and diverse country, and has a bit of something for everyone. Plus Mexican food is my absolute favourite.

Where are your favourite places in Cornwall to eat/drink/visit – or all, and why? What makes these places special for you?

A drink (can be a cup of coffee or a cocktail for example) - I love The Jam Jar Cafe in Newquay for a coffee or a smoothie, Jess makes some incredible creations!

A meal (can be a quick bite to eat or a posh meal for example) - At the moment I’m a bit obsessed with The Nude Canteen in Falmouth, they do the most amazing poke bowls made with super healthy ingredients and they are just delicious!

A walk or run/fave beach/location - My favourite Cornish beach is Godrevy. It really represents Cornwall for me with it’s grassy dunes, engine house, miles of golden sand, the seals that often pop up out of the water and of course the surf!

What is your favourite piece from the Celtic & Co Spring/Summer collection and why?

My favourite piece is a Celtic & Co. classic - The Fine Knit Merino Crew-Neck. It’s super soft and is a very versatile layer, it’s especially cosy after a dip in the sea!
